For six years, Germany's mountain troops provided rapid mobility in rough terrain where the panzers could not operate. Gebirgsjäger fought in the Carpathians, Greece, the Caucasus, Norway, Italy and on the Arctic tundra. Eventually seven divisions of elite Army mountain troops and three of very poor Waffen SS troops would be formed.
Edelweiss Expanded Edition is a Panzer Grenadier supplement adding German regular army and Waffen SS mountain troops to the game series. It is not playable by itself, but requires ownership of Eastern Front to play most of the scenarios, and Road to Berlin, Battle of the Bulge, Desert Rats and Afrika Korps to play all of them.
It's a revised version of the original Edelweiss supplement released in 2002, the second supplement to the Panzer Grenadier system. All of the previous 24 scenarios have been thoroughly revised to take advantage of map boards and playing pieces not available then, and with five more years of design experience and player feedback. And there are eight new scenarios as well. Scenarios take place on all fronts, with most of the fighting taking place on the Eastern Front but now extending to 1945. Each scenario has its own card in a spiral-bound booklet, just like the popular Iron Curtain and North Wind.
The playing pieces have not changed; the mountain troops have the proper Tirolean green-on-gray color scheme, and carry the Edelweiss symbol. In addition to mountain infantry, there are bicycle troops, captured 76.2mm guns and a handful of French-built tanks in German service.
While the Army's mountain troops are an elite force, Edelweiss also includes the truly incompetent Waffen SS mountain soldiers. Their divisions were among the worst fielded by any combatant in World War II, and the scenarios featuring them are a fine chance for Russophile players to crush a hated enemy. Two divisions of these men are covered in some detail, the 6th SS “Nord” which collapsed during the fighting in Finland, and the 7th SS “Prinz Eugen,” known by its own men as “the trash division.” The trash division gets trashed by both Soviet and Italian forces in the Edelweiss scenarios.
