The object of Derivation is to use strategy, smarts and the time honored art of bluffing to collect letters. The first player to collect the letters to spell D-E-R-I-V-A-T-I-O-N is the winner.
Derivation centers on words, phrases, quotes, abbreviations (and more) that we use all the time. You'll get "hooked" because consciously or not almost everyone is fascinated about why we say many of the words and phrases that are a part of our everyday banter.
Playing is a snap. 3 or more players are needed to play. Players write down the origins of a word, phrase or name, the author of a quote or what an abbreviation stands for on the included "Suggestion Sheets." But you don't need to know the answer -- the game is even better when you invent fake derivations to try to fool your friends. Players earn a letter by knowing the correct answer, by choosing the correct answer and by creating the most believable fake answer! In other words, bluffing is a good skill in Derivation!
Since "variety is the spice of life" the game includes additional ways for players to have fun and earn letters. The Talk category gives players one minute to describe a phrase to another player without using any of the words in the phrase. Get it right and each player earns a letter. Players can use acting and/or drawing skills in the Act/Draw category. A little bad and good luck gets thrown in with the Fortune category. Players can even trade letters to help their position. There are lots of ways to play, lots of ways to win and lots of ways to have fun at Derivation!
