The Year is 632 AD. The Byzantine Empire is all that remains of what once was the mighty Roman Empire. Meanwhile, further south in the deserts of Arabia, the prophet Mohammed has given new meaning to an old religion and sets the peoples of that land on a course of action which will echo down the ages. Under the leadership of the Caliph, the Islamic Arabs are about to descend on the prostrate bodies of the prostrate bodies of the Persian and Byzantine Empires. In Byzantium, players represent powerful families in the region, who exert their power, support, and control over both sides in this might conflict.
Players in this game represent powerful families in the region, who exert their power, support, and control over both sides in this might conflict. Players are profiteering on the actions of both the Byzantine Empire and the Arab expansion, in an effort to further expand their own personal wealth and control of the region. Players control a field army on each side of the conflict, and use their resources (money and support [represented by cubes in the game]) to play both the Arab and Byzantine forces on the board. As situations change, players will throw their support towards one side or the other in an effort to stay ahead of the other players, and ultimately dominate the region.
